Homecoming

Previously, we posted an article by Dick McCracken telling the story of Avoca, Texas.  As noted in the article, The village was plotted on what is now the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) Campus. The Avoca dormitories, situated on the west bank of the San Antonio River, were named for the village.  Further upstream, close to the Blue Hole, you will find the convergence two estuaries, the headwaters of the San Antonio River at the Blue Hole, and the Olmos Creek.

The area to the west of this convergence is home to UIW's athletic facilities, including the Barshop Natatorium, McDermott Convocation Center, and Benson Stadium. This is also where the 2nd Annual South Texas Alamo Irish Festival (STAIF) will be held on March 14th.  Click here for more details.

For those of us of Irish heritage,  This makes the STAIF a sort of homecoming, as this is the place where early Irish settlers attempted to make a home, and where we, and all of San Antonio celebrate our "Irishness".
